I know I've had trouble in the past finding a good nest box for adult ball pythons. Most on the market are too small to accomodate an adult snake and a clutch of eggs. I tried just placing a tray filled with damp sphagnum moss in the tank with the nesting female, but 9 times out of 10 she would lay her clutch of eggs underneath the box instead of in it. This wasn't very helpful since I intended to artificially incubate the eggs. So I devised a new plan.
I started using a cheap cat litter pan as the bottom tray.
However, I needed a covered nesting box so that my females would feel more secure in it, and use it instead of the dry cage floor. I purchased an additional cat litter pan, cut a door into it, lined it up over the bottom pan, and made holes in the edges on two sides. I threaded some string through these holes in order to secure the top pan to the bottom one.
I then tied the string into a bow instead of a knot on one side, so that it would be easy to access once the eggs arrive.
Once that was done, the nest box was ready to use. An inexpensive yet sturdy container with the top secured to the bottom, but also allowing easy access to the mother and eggs. Works great, and since I've started using these, my females always lay their eggs in the box.
